There is a eternal argument about whether people should just accept the bad circumstances such as unsatisfactory job and lack of money, or try their best to improve it desperately when they are in such situation.

Most of all, all of us have to admit that both of these two behaviour contains some extent of truth. As far as I’m concerned, I personally believe that the reasons why they make different decisions are the different assessments of their own abilities and external environments.

On the one hand, as far as the first kind of people is concerned, there are several reasons for their behaviour, but in general, they come down to two main one.

First reason is incompetence. If they feel like that they have no abilities to change their own situation, they usually tend to maintain status quo. For example, in China, off-farm workers lead a miserable life. They make lowest wages, live in crappy houses, eat terrible food, but do the toughest work. Except for this, they can only gain very little social security. Although their working environment are so poor, they still accept it negatively, because it’s the best job they can get. If they refuse this type of work, then their only end is to starve to death on the streets.

Second reason is benefit. If people belong to the vested interest group, they will not choose to change the situation even if it’s terrible since the change will only make their circumstances worse just like some staffs of state-owned enterprises. In spite of low efficiency of enterprises, staffs still won’t try any improvement because any change will only aggravate the bad situation. They can gain a meager salaries if they keep the status quo, but if any change happened, they may directly lose their jobs.

On the other hand, as for the second category of people, the reason why they decide to improve may be that they firmly believe that they possess the enough power to change their own situation. For example, if one of my friends once suffered from the overtime, after communicating with his superiors to no avail, he chose to resign and then start his own business.

As far as I’m concerned, I personally believe that these two choices are essentially the same. In fact, when we are in trouble, we can choose both of these two methods. Firstly, think the best solution of this dilemma and bear it until the right time comes. But if the situation is very urgent, then we have to act as soon as possible.

To sum up, the most predominant thing is to calmly analyze the problem we faced and take the most suitable action according to our strength and the extend of difficulty of our own situation .
