with the global prevalence of obesity and associated health risks such as type two diabete and cardiovascular disease soaring, health-related taxes, especially sugar-related, have become an established policy option intended to reduce energy intake by increasing the prices of sugary products.

Although there are still some valid arguments to the contrary, I personally believe that it is unreasonable for anyone to reduce the consume of sugar by raising its prices. The reason for this is twofold.

Most of all, it’s acknowledge thta unlike cigarettes, sugar won’t always harm individual health. In fact, most of time, most people are beneficiary of sugar, since sugar can provide most of essential energy which is necessary for daily activities of human body. Beyond this, for some people, especially the poor, sugar often play a role similar to morphine, which can relieve their physical or emotional pain, in their lives. So if the sugary products’ prices jump to the point where those people feel like that the pleasure which sugar can provide doesn’t not worth the price, they may take risks of trying more dangerous and harmful ways to relieve their pain. For instance, they may hit the bottle or more extremely, take narcotic drugs.

Secondly, as we all know, almost every thing that people eat every day, like noodle, rice, bread, potato and orange contains different levels of sugar. If we finally decide to reduce sugar intake with a mark-up, almost everything we eat will increase in price, which will have a disastrous impact on our daily lives.

At last, to sum up, it’s unwise for us to simply reduce the sugar intake by raising the prices. In my point of view, developing more effective treatment of obesity and its complication or enhancing the people’s awareness of fitness or informing people how to eat healthily will be more practical method of reducing sugar intake.
